Sustainability is on everyone’s lips, and the Thuringian company GRAFE from Blankenhain is also involved in the development of specific masterbatches for corresponding applications. “We have been working on the coloring of bio-based and home-compostable materials for some time now,” reports Lars Schulze, Head of Color Development and Material Sciences. “We were able to successfully establish the first projects on the market and commercialise them. We have gained extensive experience and done a lot of development work. We will continue to push forward the projects with a sustainable character.” Home compostable products meet the highest standards of environmental protection, according to the company. For example, the company has successfully colored coffee capsules in a very elaborate development project. “Given the strict guidelines according to which the masterbatches may only contain certain ingredients and the pigments can only be used in limited concentrations, this is quite a demanding task. Nevertheless, we succeeded in over-coloring the dark base material, explains Schulze. In the end, the colors maroon, light grey, brilliant blue, blue-grey, petrol brilliant, olive brilliant, violet brilliant as well as beige and berry were used from GRAFE’s Modalen range. The certification came into effect on 14 August 2020. “We are currently working on PHBV projects,” Schulze reports. This is a home compostable, non-toxic, biocompatible plastic that is produced naturally by bacteria and offers a good alternative for many non-biodegradable, synthetic polymers. “Besides the difficulties of the biopolymers currently on offer, in terms of processing, inherent color and temperature resistance, another major challenge is their coloring or over-coloring. Both the plastic base material and the additives should have as little impact on the environment as possible and be biodegradable in order to achieve the certification goals,” explains the expert...

TEUFEL Prototypes is using a special climate-friendly polymer "PA CarbonReduced" for SLS applications. The new "CarbonReduced PA white" has a greatly improved climate effect and, in accordance with the TEUFEL prototype sustainability guideline, contributes to the reduction of CO2 in our production process. By using renewable energies, the CO2 footprint in the production of SLS parts from our "PA white CarbonReduced" is almost 45% lower than with conventional PA. This also has no influence on the high quality and material composition.

Cardiotomy reservoir
The cardiotomy reservoir is a critical part of the heart-lung machine that maintains lung gas exchange and blood circulation during open heart surgery. The majority of all heart operations are performed on an open heart. These interventions place high demands on personnel, medical materials and equipment. Because the heart has to stand still while the heart surgeons operate on it. But of course the gas exchange in the lungs and the large blood circulation must continue to run reliably during this time. The machines that take on this task are known as heart-lung machines or HLM. A crucial part of the HLM is the cardiotomy reservoir, which is located upstream of the artificial lung - the oxygen generator. When resting, the human heart typically beats around 60 times per minute and transports 60 ml to 90 ml of blood per heartbeat. That's about 300 liters of blood per hour that the HLM has to transport while it takes over the tasks of the heart and lungs. It is important to prevent hemolysis - a mechanical overload that can damage the gas-transporting red blood cells, causing them to lose their function. The cardiotomy reservoir must therefore function both robustly and precisely over many hours and procedures. This also brings with it major challenges in the manufacturing and testing process, because in addition to a high-quality product, the effort and costs must remain within the limits of the available resources. This is exactly what we have achieved with this innovative and customer-oriented all-inclusive solution:
